Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry: “Tonight was a really good test for us in advance of the state playoffs. If you want to be successful, you’ve got to see how you match up against great teams. Teams that have the size and blocking of Barrington, and the ball control and shot-making that Loyola has. We were able to adjust our attack and our defense on the fly, and that’s very encouraging as we get down the stretch. That said, we still aren’t passing well enough to connect with our middles the way we have in the past. It’s a strength for us, and we need to focus on feeding Ryan and Josh and Anthony the ball. They can all terminate at a high efficiency, so we need to keep them involved. Senior outside hitter Tony Mischiara continues to quietly get the job done for us. His error rate has gone way down since early in the season. He’s finishing the open shots and playing smart with location when there’s not an easy kill available. Having him opposite (senior outside hitter) Jack McDonald gives us nice balance. And (opposite) Nick Bryson just keeps getting better every day. He’s our biggest blocker, so to have him up against hitters as big as Barrington was crucial. He not only had 4 blocks in that match, he forces hitters to hit around him at times. And we can’t forget the lineup of defenders. We’ve rotated liberos all year, and they’ve each had stellar runs here and there. Each guy is working on his weaknesses. Lately, senior Jeff Altmark has passed more consistently and turned his serve from a liability into a weapon, so he’s been starting. But senior Jax Goldufsky is a great server, too, and knows the game so well, and junior Kavin Manivasagam passes serve at a high level and brings so much energy to the floor. We’ll need all of them if we’re going to keep winning.”
