Carmel coach David Pazely: “Tonight’s match was a rollercoaster ride. Both teams came out with some early game nerves showing and errors followed as a result. Carmel made a few plays to gain some momentum with some quality blocks and a couple aces.  Our serving kept them out of system a lot of the first which helped our offense transition quickly and effectively. St. Viator hung tough and fought back but after a late timeout we were able to side out and seal the first set. St. Viator’s end of the game momentum carried over into the 2nd set and they jumped out to a 7-0 lead.  Their hitters came alive, their serving was on point and Carmel struggled to regain its composure.  We started playing sideout volleyball at the end, but the deficit was too great at that point. The final set played out almost exactly like the first. Our offense was much more dynamic thanks to great passing and excellent, balanced distribution from Claire Parker. Our back row made a few adjustments and found themselves reading hitters better and getting more digs.  Our blockers were getting more touches and earned some clutch points forcing their hitters to think twice about what they did next.  We limited their runs with some timely plays and maintained momentum to the end. We had a few players in different roles for us tonight. Isa Swiatkowski, one of our captains, is usually our libero, but we shifted her to rightside and she played all six rotations. Alyssa Kamins was playing three rotations as a defensive specialist in right back, but we moved her to libero. Our serve receive was stronger as a result and the amount of court the two of them were able to cover was incredible. Isa has been mentoring Alyssa since the start of the season and they have stayed after to get extra reps together. Their dedication is paying off with improved performances and now a win over a quality opponent. I have been impressed with the character of every member of this team, this is just one example.”
Next up: Carmel hosts Warren on Thursday.
