Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry: “We tried a little different lineup in the first set tonight, and we just didn’t execute. Too many service and hitting errors. Once we returned to something a little more familiar, we still made too many service and hitting errors, but had better luck stopping their point runs. We had some familiar hitting patterns to fall back on. Senior middle hitter John Otoo. We just didn’t give him the ball enough. Freshman Jack McDonald picked a great night to have another great service night. He’s so steady, I’m actually surprised he missed two serves. At the end, after we let the third set lead completely go, we found just enough fight to finish. I love the way Maine East blocked. They took away hitting lanes all night. And we blocked a bunch of balls that should have been kills, but their kids found a way to keep them alive in cover. They scrapped and moved faster than us almost all night. Jon Kuleza really has those kids playing well. We were lucky to survive that one.”
