Minooka, Plainfield Central play to aid cancer victim

The Minooka and Plainfield Central high schools girls’ varsity volleyball teams are hoping to score a lot of points on September 19 to benefit Shorewood HUGS as they plan their “HITS for HUGS” fundraiser.

Their goal is to raise enough money to grant 10 wishes, including a special wish for Dawn Derby, a single mother of three children, who is currently battling cancer.

Members of the volleyball programs have been soliciting donations for every point each varsity team scores during their contest on September 19 at Minooka. For example, if a team scores a total of 50 points, a donation of $.50 per point will generate a donation of $25.

Also, T-shirts will be sold at the match.

All monetary proceeds from the event will benefit Shorewood HUGS. Shorewood HUGS is a local organization that supports those in need in the community. In the past year they have worked closely with the families of Minooka staff members Shawn Capodice, Michael Assaf and Sam Pavelka.

HUGS’ mission is to make a positive impact on the lives of people in our community and the surrounding communities one hug at a time, to host unique events and to raise money for those less fortunate, to support other organizations, and to touch the hearts of people by giving them hope of a brighter tomorrow.

Minooka is currently ranked No. 3 in the illprepvb.com statewide poll, and Plainfield Central features 6-foot-5 outside hitter Taylor Landfair, one of the top sophomores in the country.
