Carmel def. Lakes 25-20, 25-15
Lakes (4-5 overall, 0-0 in the Northern Lake County Conference).
Carmel (8-5 overall, 0-0 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference): Reese Wagner (4 kills), Scarlett Olszowka (4 kills), Charlotte Shepherd (11 assists), Molly Malzahn (9 digs, 2.3 serve receive average), Charlotte Shepherd (7 digs, 1 block), Lauren Olson (2 blocks, 2 digs), Suzy Trznadel (2 aces, 11/11 serving).
Carmel coach David Pazely: “Serving and serve receive were the big difference makers in tonight’s match.  Carmel had 6 aces and served at 85 percent as a team with a serve receive of 1.93, but Lakes missed more than 10 serves and struggled in serve receive. As a result, they were out of system most of the night and we transitioned free balls, tips and rolls into kills. Lakes found some momentum at the end of the first set and went on a 5-point run but a missed serve to end the set. The Corsairs got a first-ball kill to start the second set, reestablished our momentum and kept the pressure on Lakes to the final whistle. I’m proud of how our players settled their nerves after the first couple of points.  The last time these two teams met was in the regional championship and the players were feeling that tension.  There were a lot of scrappy defensive rallies, but Carmel was able to stay disciplined and win most of those points. That kept momentum on our side throughout most of the night.  Starting fast in the second set with a first-ball kill got us back in the driver’s seat, and we put together a couple long runs with great serving from Suzy (Trznadel) and Molly (Malzahn) to open up a lead and finish the match.”
