Newark def. Durand 25-23, 24-26, 25-20
Durand (36-3 overall, 13-0 in the Upstate Illini): Marissa Kelsey (36 assists, 13 digs), McKenzie Damon (13 kills, 6 digs, 2 blocks), Katie Nevdal (12 kills, 11 digs), Jaci Damon (6 digs), Hannah Proctor (8 kills, 3 blocks).
Durand coach Molly Kelsey: “We gave up a lead in the first set to allow Newark to get the win. Fortunately, we rallied around and played some incredibly strong defense in the second set. Sara Moore served tough when Newark was at set point. Hannah Proctor had a block and a kill to get us a close win in the second set. The third set we came out with momentim from our win, but unfortunately we had a huge injury with Abby (Erickson) that put us down a hitter. The girls were still able to play extremely strong and finish a close match. I, like many others, believe that this was a state series match that happened to be played at supersectionals rather than Redbird Arena. It was such a great season, so many memorable games and moments. I am so proud of these girls and their dedication to the program throughout the year and off season. They have given life to the community and school. I hope they know what an inspiration they are to everyone.”
Newark (38-2).
