Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry: “After a long week (losses to Glenbrook North and Deerfield), it was nice to see the boys rewarded for sticking with each other, for fighting and for focusing on getting better. We reduced our errors a ton, and the results finally went our way. Drake DeBoer was the Drake we had all last year… and earlier this year. He cut his errors way down, both in attack and serve. And when he’s on, we’re a different team. Jonathan Wallach and Noah Proft made good decisions all night moving the ball around. Noah connected on some slides with John Otoo late in both the second and third sets that were crucial. Also, junior Greg Tow came off the bench and gave us tough serving when we needed it, getting us runs in both the second and third sets that got us some separation. Best of all, when things went
against us late in the third set (leading 24-20 and then tied at 24-24), the guys stayed composed, stayed aggressive. They also stopped letting Warren get easy kills on tips and rolls, things we weren’t picking up in the first set. Freshman Jack McDonald had a nice night again and Derrick Jones got some huge kills late and improved the intensity of his serve when we needed it.”
