Carmel coach David Pazely: “The first set was a tight battle start to finish. Each team had a lead but it never extended beyond 3 points for either side. We made far too many errors in the first set and it cost us. We were able to regain our composure at the outside and rightside positions and errors turned into kills in the second and third sets, especially Bella Lucero. A huge factor was a fast start in the second set. Isa Swiatkowski served six straight with a couple of aces, Abbey Sullivan added a couple of blocks and Bella Lucero had a couple of kills that put us up 6-0 to start the second set. We never gave the lead back. Similar start in the third where we started with 4 quick points for an early lead and we kept the pressure on them, never letting them get within more than 3 points the rest of the night. Huge respect to Lakes and their coaching staff. They made some adjustments which forced us to shift our defense, then they made a couple other changes, forcing us to adjust again. It was a great chess match. Thankfully, my coaching staff was on top of everything they threw at us, and our girls were able to continue to earn points even when Lakes started to find some offensive rhythm. Backup setter Ashley Villalobos stepped in as a serving specialist for us in the playoffs and had 3 aces for us tonight on 17/17 serving. She was a huge difference-maker for us and had multiple point runs almost every time she stepped to the service line. She served out the match and got one of her three aces to make it 24-17 and delivered again to ice the game. This team has faced an unprecedented amount of adversity this season in ways I have never had to deal with before. The message all season long was make today better than yesterday. It hasn’t been easy, but they have been grinding and growing as a result. All that work was on full display tonight and I couldn’t be prouder of these girls.  We will enjoy this win tonight but it’s back to work tomorrow as we prepare for Belvidere North on Monday.”
