Carmel coach David Pazely: “It’s always great to start the season with a win. Credit to Wauconda for how they fought all the way to the end. We won the first set convincingly and were up 24-20 in the second set, but they battled back to win and forced a third. The third set was back and forth until 15-15 and the Corsairs started to separate with some great serving to get them out of system. Wauconda’s big hitter, Emily Lisi, was all over the court tonight and had a great night offensively, but Carmel’s defense stiffened up and we were able to outlast them in the third. Tonight was a team win, but I would highlight Claire Parker for her 20 assists and excellent in-game decisions, Isa Swiatkowski for her 17 digs and leadership all night, Abbey Sullivan for her 9 kills and huge net presence defensively, and Alyssa Kamins for her 15 digs, 4 aces and perfect serving which kept Wauconda out of system most of the night.  We have nine seniors on this year’s team and these four stepped up big to start the season.”
