Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne: “Batavia had five missed serves in Game 1, but otherwise played a pretty clean set and dominated on offense. In Game 2, Wheaton North came out strong, hitting very well. We were down 17-9 and came back to win it on some great defensive plays. We were playing to win and just outworked Wheaton North in the end, as they had been playing great offense and blocking us well in Game 2. But our serving and defense pulled it out in the end. Our tough schedule certainly paid off in situations like Game 2.”

We are blessed to have such talent and depth at the defensive specialist position this season. Mya Mainzer caught fire from the service line going with 4 aces, and everyone contributed to tonight’s victory. Carmel is excited about the 30 wins during the regular season, but is hungry for a long playoff run. We are fortunate to host regionals and will hopefully be playing the following week at Vernon Hills in the sectional.”

Vernon Hills coach Arian Colton: “The Cougars’ underclassmen set the tone on defense. Amjadi led the way with 12 digs and sophomore Victoria Lukyan added 8 digs. After dropping a close first set, the Cougars pulled together and rallied to win Games 2 and 3. Serving was the key to success. Jacklyn Self had 7 aces, five in the third set. The freshmen duo of Alexa Cieslinksi and Ellen Amjadi both added 3 aces to the Cougars’ success. Cece Schumacher was called to the match late in the third set to add another ace at a key point in that set.”
