Vernon Hills coach Max Spiglanin: “The Vernon Hills Cougars battled through a competitive field at the Grayslake Round Robin, finishing third place overall and earning program’s best finish at the tournament in the last four years. The Cougars opened the tournament against eventual champion Libertyville, falling 25-19, 25-17 in two tightly contested sets. Vernon Hills then faced eventual runner-up Carmel in another hard-fought match. The Cougars battled back to force a third set before falling by just two points, 25-19, 24-26, 15-13. Rather than letting the two narrow losses define their day, the Cougars responded with three consecutive victories, defeating South Elgin 25-7, 25-16, Grayslake North 25-8, 25-13, and Grayslake Central 25-17, 25-19 to close out the round robin in third place. Defensive intensity was a defining factor throughout the tournament. The Cougars put on a defensive clinic all day, led by senior libero/defensive specialist Ally Koetz and sophomore libero/defensive specialist Claire Ayvazian, who anchored the backcourt and consistently kept rallies alive. Sophomore setter Aria Shah directed the Cougars’ offense throughout the tournament, finishing with an impressive 86 assists and 12 aces. Shah provided her hitters with a variety of offensive options, setting sophomore middle Elliana Russell, sophomore outside Kiersten Cieslinski, senior outside Natalie Hill, and senior middle Mya Beitzel. The Cougars received significant contributions from throughout the roster, resulting in a complete team performance and one of the program’s strongest tournament finishes in recent years.”
