Carmel coach David Pazely: “Carmel controlled Game 1 by jumping out to an early lead. Our block did a good job controlling the net and slowing their hitters down. Our serve receive was solid and we were able to work in system most of the first set. Credit to Lakes, they came out ready to fight in Game 2. Their servers got more aggressive with a lead and we were scrambling out of system a lot more. Also, their outside hitters came alive and they were earning a lot more points than in Game 1. Carmel tried to fight back, but we dug too deep a hole to climb out of. Game 3 was a different story. We regained our consistency and played some of the best volleyball we have all season. Isa Swiatkowski went off at the service line and ripped eight or nine serves in a row to open up a 10-point lead. Lakes started playing some side-out volleyball for a few rotations, but when Abby Blanchette got back in the front row she took over and closed things out. One of our unsung heroes is junior defensive specialist Alyssa Kamins, who plays right back for us. She was clutch all night for us with 7 digs and a 2.25 serve receive. She covers a lot of ground and picked up a bunch of tips that could have swung momentum if Lakes had scored off them.”
Next up: Carmel will compete at the Grayslake Central Tournament on Saturday.
