Sandburg (19-13) went 4-1 at the Richards tournament defeating Richards, Morton, Stagg and Hinsdale South in straight sets before losing in the championship to Downers Grove North 25-22, 25-21. Senior opposite hitter Will Marks and freshman libero Jeremiah Burden were named to the all-tournament team.

 Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry: “Last night was a slog, and we couldn’t often get out of our own way. This morning was much better. When we were down 18-17 in Game 1 against New Trier in the semifinals, we had a few clean looks, took hard swings and just missed. Then we missed three out of four serves trying to be too careful and lost contact. But the kids played some of our best volleyball of the year in the second set. We were down 20-19 when we put a few errors back to back, but then battled back from 24-21 to knot it up at 24 and 25.  (Junior middle hitter) Joey Reyes came back from injury and gave us a lift offensively today (11 kills, 4 blocks), and (junior defensive specialist) Ryan Pristas was a great spark plug when we were down early in the last match. His energy and communication turned that around for us.
(Senior outside hitter) Derrick Jones had a great offensive weekend (40 kills, 8 blocks, 16 digs). (Setter) Jonathan Wallach continued to improve. He’s gotten better all year at figuring out the offense, and now he’s added some defense to his game (74 assists, 4 aces, 17 digs), and (junior libero) Sammy Adkisson played great this week. He’s moving around better and making digs he was getting early in the season (51 digs, 2 aces).”
